Old Forge, New York

The best traditions are those that repeat themselves flawlessly again and again. My family has been visiting Bahr Cottage in Old Forge, NY for as long as I can remember (and even before I was old enough to go). Summers that we were not in England on a coastal holiday, my Grandparents and cousins would come to NY and we would spend a week in the Adirondacks: hiking, swimming, boating, eating ice cream, playing mini-golf, going to the arcade and water park, and barbecuing.

Prior to this trip the last time I had been at the cottage was over Labour Day 2011 after a summer spent working in New Orleans. The time before that was even farther back- just prior to my senior year of high school.

This year’s Labour Day Weekend trip was particularly special because not only was it a reunion of close friends and family whose lives are now scattered to the winds, but because a very good family friend, who used to accompany us when we were much younger, was able to bring her two kids to experience all the things that she had. The magic of Old Forge is that very little has changed despite it having been well over a decade since she last visited.

The deer still come right up to you outside the house, the fire towers atop Bald and Blue mountain are still there (though they may have been rebuilt), the pontoon boat ride from First to Fourth Lake still takes the same amount of time, the temperature of the lake is still freezing when you first jump in, the ice cream at Inlet is still as delicious as ever and the Over the Rainbow mini-golf course still accepts vouchers for free games won many years ago (we have since learned they never expire). It truly is a magical place and a tradition that I hope to keep going for years to come.
