A Playlist for Autumn Upstate

Autumn: the period of time where I am most happy and simultaneously most homesick. Because Upstate New York does Autumn best.

Yeah, okay pretty much every east coast state will claim superiority in this fall game, but driving through the Catskills into that cold, crisp fresh air that is northern New York… let’s just say it makes the 6 hour drive between New York City and Rochester seem like a fleeting moment. So, if you’re in the city and so inclined to head north, here are some places to keep in mind.

Places to Explore

Blue Hill Farm
A stone’s throw from NYC, this is a day trip all in itself. Just take a drive or a Metro North train to Tarrytown, and explore all that the historic town (made famous by Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”) and farm have to offer.

Pollywogg Hollër Eco-Resort
Make a weekend of Pollywogg Holler, take in the foliage, walk though sculpture gardens, relax in the wood fired sauna, fill yourself with delicious and organic food. Better yet, bring all your closest friends too. Nothing says friendship like drinking hot cocoa together around a fire in a cabin in the woods.

Powers Farm Market
I honestly don’t know why you’d come to Rochester for sightseeing itself, but say you have family in the city and don’t know what to do with yourself between Wegmans and the mall. It’s cool, I’ve got you covered. Find your way to Powers Farm Market, which has everything from pies, to apples, to teepees filled with Jack-o-Lanterns and haunted hayrides.

Old Forge, NY
The turning of the leaves is most likely finishing in the Adirondack’s now, but don’t let that stop you from visiting Old Forge. Old Forge is the perfect launching point for any Adirondack hiking adventure. Go and explore the largest and most beautiful National Park on the East Coast.

If you can’t make it to America, or if you’ve unwisely used all of your vacation days during this summer, here’s a playlist so you can at least throw on a cosy sweater, close your eyes and pretend that you can smell hot, fresh cider doughnuts.
