Throughout my life thus far I have been fortunate enough to live and travel all over the world and meet many incredible people. This has been one of my greatest joys, but it also means that I often feel like my heart is split into a multitude of pieces that have been spread across the globe. I find myself wishing I could be everywhere at once, simultaneously living all the sub-lives that have pieced together to form my own with all the groups of people who at one point or another were an integral part of my daily life.
I bring this up not to embark on some deep, meaningful monologue, but rather to give a bit of context to how thrilled I was to have a very good friend of mine who had been a large part of my life in Edinburgh show up at Stanford for an extended-afternoon adventure. Don’t get me wrong- new friends are certainly exciting in their own right, and old friends can never become old friends if they were never at one point new, but there is something very comforting about seeing someone from a ‘past’ life in the context of your ‘new’ life and seeing Aditi in California was the epitome of feeling this comfort and familiarity.
There are few places I feel more alive than being around a body of water and the Pacific is one of my favourites. Aditi has a similar affinity to water and therefore it was natural that we found ourselves at Pomponio State Beach off of Highway 1.
We leisurely wandered up and down exploring the beach, chatting and catching each other up on our respective current lives. It never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to fall back into a pattern with a good friend you have not seen for a long time and that is exactly what happened between Aditi and myself. For several hours I felt both as if I were in a completely different world than the one that I normally live in, but also that I was somehow back in the world we once shared so much more closely.
By the time we headed back over the mountains to South Bay and I dropped Aditi at her brother’s apartment I was feeling completely content and while it was sad to have to say goodbye, I knew it would only be a few months before I saw her again. The next time we catch-up it will be in central London, a very different setting than the Northern Californian coast, but when it comes to reunions with old friends I know I can always count on it being really wonderful.
