Before moving to London, I made it a personal mission to visit every market before next September. I’ve made a fairly serious dent in my list so far (personal favorites being Camden Lock and Borough) but hadn’t yet made the Sunday morning plunge into East London to visit Columbia Road Flower Market. My little flat has been in desperate need of some foliage since October, and I knew Columbia Road was the perfect place to remedy that.
The Columbia Road Flower Market is held on Sundays from 8:00AM until 3:00PM, along with the charming stores hidden behind the masses of primroses. Tucked away in the unassuming streets of Hoxton, the crammed and bustling market is bursting with every type of colorful flower, house plant and herb I could ever need.
When I arrived with Diana, I thought, “Yes! This will be easy. A floor plant and a small table plant, for £10 or less.” Twenty minutes later and overwhelmed by my options, I settled on a spikey triple stemmed floor plant and a beautiful blue-grey succulent. Despite the fact that last three succulents I’ve had have died, I am determined to keep this one alive, and my does it look nice it the tin vase I picked up at one of the neighboring shops, Openhouse.
In addition to my new greenery, I was able to finally visit Rob Ryan’s London store, Ryantown, whose art and illustrations I have always admired. I also discovered a wonderfully kitsch Mexican decor shop called Milagros, and beautiful candles by St Eval Candle Company (available in many of the home decor shops along the road).
My only disappointment while visiting Columbia Road Flower Market was that I am only able to visit this beautifully vibrant street on Sunday mornings and early afternoons, which for a night owl like me, made waking up difficult but entirely worth it.
